We shared two free days of #MATSprep ahead of the start of Assignment Bootcamp 2019 in February. What’s a #MATSprep? It’s a set of free exercises to get prepared for class, or just to enjoy some creative fun and inspiration, and they’re a great way to see what Lilla’s playful teaching style is all about.
MATS preps are usually spread over a couple of days or more, and each day you complete a task without knowing what you’ll be doing with it the following day. As you can imagine, it’s enormous fun and always entertaining to find out where each prep will take you, but it’s also a brilliant way to find the joy in your artmaking, to just be in the moment and to play. Plus not knowing what will happen next is exciting and engaging; and breaking bigger jobs down into smaller chunks makes them manageable and enjoyable, rather than overwhelming – all of which is typical of Lilla’s warm, fun and unique teaching style.
Here’s how Lilla’s Bootcamp #MATSprep worked:
Day 1
On Day 1, Lilla asked you to go around your house and find all sorts of quirky bits of colorful stuff and goodness and then photograph what you found. Here are some of your gorgeous collections.

The Day 1 collections are a wonderful exercise in composition and discernment, which is an important part of understanding your own unique style.

- Do you have loads of things or just a few? Do you bunch them all up close together or space them out?
- Is your background dark or light? Natural or manmade? Have you put a frame around it?
- Have you gone for the full rainbow or a more selective range of colors? Are they muted or bright?
- Are your trinkets and things themed? Are they natural or plastic? Old or new?

On Day 2, we gave you Lilla’s free downloadable Arty Worksheet to complete: a playful way to come up with a fresh new color palette. Want to play? Download your worksheet here.
Lilla completed this worksheet to show students what to do. It can be a great exercise in creativity to mix up your palette from time to time, and this game is a fun and simple way to do it!
