What makes you weird is what makes your brand special (free video series + chance to win)

Lilla often gets asked what makes an artist stand out. Her favorite answer is ‘What makes you weird makes your brand special!’ What? It’s OK to be quirky, an oddball, different from everyone else? As a thank you for being part of our fantastic MATS community, in the week of Thanksgiving we will be offering a free video series on monetizing those quirks! SIGN UP HERE to receive three videos, delivered to your inbox from November 23-25. In this free series Lilla will share… Why it pays to be different/weird/quirky How to identify the differences that you can use to your advantage in your art career How to take those quirks and make them your signature How to attract mainstream clients with your quirks, not put them off Other tips on monetizing your quirks

#mygtsprep – Mini Assignment 5: Demographics

What the heck are ‘demographics’ and why do they matter to you as an artist? When I was an illustration student, I always wanted to know who the job was for. Was it a cool magazine where I could do my edgiest work, or a more staid one, where I would be myself – always – but rein in the edges? As a working illustrator, I loved knowing who the client was. Was it the New York Times or Vogue? A Japanese travel magazine or an American cosmetics company? It informed my art. You want to understand the type of client you’re making art for. It’s NOT that you alter your very being. Rather, it’s about getting a feel for things. Is it very feminine? Is it for kids? Is it very intellectual? Is it for foodies or techies?

As the 2015 Global Talent Search approaches I want to share some really important insight with you through today’s mini. It’s all about how you compose your artwork.   Mini assignment 4: Kick ass composition How your artwork is composed is so important! I’ve seen really great icons or products on a page passed on by art directors because the overall layout is not as strong as it could be. Don’t let that happen to you!

#mygtsprep – Mini Assignment 1: Sock Research

It’s prep time for our annual Global Talent Search (GTS) – one of the most closely-watched events in our industry. This year, we’re offering a series of five mini assignments to get you ready to rock the competition, which will be shared daily here on the blog all this week. If you have not yet registered, book your place here and then dive into these ‘minis’ to help you get ready for the main competition.   Mini assignment 1: Sock research Your first mission is to do research on socks, and take photos of them. What socks do you see out there? What socks do you like? What do you have in your sock drawer? Are they patterned? Textured? Hand-knit? What about on the bus, or in the town? What socks are other people wearing?

How to be a successful online creative freelancer

Today, the freelancer movement is booming with more and more people finding work online. No matter where we live, we can reach out to more people and have access to more work. We have the whole world at our fingertips. Working online is especially adapted to the creative industries and this article explores how artists can make the most of remote working. This is a joint article by Lilla Rogers, successful artist, founder of internationally renowned art agency Lilla Rogers Studio and founder of Make Art That Sells , and Do What You Love, award winning online courses that help people find personal and financial freedom and producer of the Make Art That Sells e-courses. Why online freelance work makes sense today (an introduction by Do What You Love)   Although freelancing and remote working aren’t new concepts at all (believe it or not, freelancing dates back to the 1800s!), the number of

What makes a great Home Décor Collection and start sketching your own!

This is a guest blog post by Margo Tantau, VP of Creative at MidwestCBK Margo has co-written our brand new course, MATS: Creating Collections for Home Décor, with Lilla Rogers. She will also be speaking at MATS: The Global Art Gathering, our LIVE event in Brighton UK this June. Home Décor as a rule, needs designs that can be LIVED with. I won’t be cliché and say “ageless and timeless”, but I will say, think about what the subject matter is, what kind of a home it might be going in, as well as what would potentially sell most broadly. Think of all the varieties of style that you see on the market, on Pinterest and in magazines. Designs that are sophisticated, clean, lovely, graphic, floral… these are all relevant to Home Décor. Collections need to go well together, and equally and strongly should stand on their own. Designing these
