Sonja says: “If you have never heard of Make Art That Sells, head on over to the website and check it out. It is fun and exciting but be ready to work hard and learn! I am 50 and I still wonder if it might be a bit crazy to be jumping into the big wide world of illustration at my age, but Lilla Rogers and the team are so kind and encouraging and there is so much valuable insight to learn from the MATS community.”

Head over to her full blog post here to read more about her Make Art That Sells experience, find out which MATS courses she’ll be doing next year and which one she recommends if you’re just doing one, and to see more of her lovely work.

Cora Hardin

Cora Hardin wrote about the Illustrating Children’s Books course. Cora is a newcomer to both illustration and to Make Art That Sells courses, and we loved hearing how she embraced the challenge of this intense, indepth course. Art agent and Make Art That Sells co-teacher, Lilla Rogers, works hard to ensure that the courses are accessible to everyone and bring out the best in every student, whatever level they’re at, so it was wonderful to hear about Cora’s fantastic experience with the course.

What was Cora’s verdict? She says: “Even if it is a stretch for you, take the course. [..] I learned a lot, I stretched, I grew, my mind was blown open in the best of ways, and I can continue to grow and learn and milk every last drop out of the course experience and content for months. So, even if you are a beginner, if you are motivated and excited, I still say: go for it!

Michelle Carlos

Michelle Carlos has signed up for a whole year of Make Art That Sells courses, with our brilliant (and incredible value!) My Year of Art School bundle. She chose to review the Illustrating Children’s Books course (ICB) in the blog post she sent us, with tons of info about her process and lots of lovely eye candy to enjoy, including her environment spread from the course.

Full page spread created by Make Art That Sells student Michelle Carlos on our recent Illustrating Children’s Books course. Find out what Michelle thought of the course in her blog here.

In Illustrating Children’s Books, students are provided with three brand new and exclusive texts written especially for class by brilliant children’s book art director, published children’s author and course co-teacher, Zoë Tucker. Michelle chose to illustrate a text inspired by Greta Thunberg (which is being published this month as Greta and the Giants – the second children’s book that Zoë has had published this year!).

Michelle says: “A few things I realized during this course: 1. I can draw people—what was I so worried about?, 2. MATS ICB e-course is really effective, 3. I could roll with the punches […] and use them to my advantage. I knew I am not going to get it right the first time and that is completely fine, 4. I may have cracked the code of an emerging style, 5. I love children’s books art and I am definitely going for it. You see? Sometimes we just need to channel Greta’s spirit and be brave.”
