Lilla here. Can you believe that My Toy Pitch starts in less than a week? I’m so hyped for class to start: I know you’re going to love it and we’re going to make tons of amazing art tapping into those wonderful quirky minds of yours.

Plus it’s an incredible opportunity to get your art directly in front of not one but TWO art agents. Last year we offered representation to two students from My Toy Pitch alone – you could be next!

Did you have fun researching for your Blobby Worksheet for Part 1 of your FREE #MATSprep warm up assignment? (If you missed it then click here to find out more and join in.)

Are you amazed at all the gorgeous toy and game products out there? It’s endless, isn’t it? It’s such a hot market for your art right now. Products for children are always a strong market for artists in any economy, and it’s especially true right now during the pandemic because parents are so keen to get their kids off their devices for a little while, and because we all need that little dopamine hit that internet shopping provides.

Part 2 is going to be a little bit more time consuming than Part 1, but it’s going to be great preparation for class, a lot of fun, and it’s going to give you some great insights into the toy and game market.

Erin Williams MTP1 week1 1

Toy pitch created by Make Art That Sells student Erin Williams for My Toy Pitch. Want to make gorgeous art like this and find out how to pitch to companies? Sign up now!

Riley has come up with a great theme for you to draw which is both hilarious and visually delightful, but also perfect for the toy and game market because it involves:

  • Animals as characters, which are always in demand
  • A scene or story which makes an environment, a play world for kids
  • A fresh idea

Drum roll please …

Your theme is: School-aged aliens making desserts in science class!

Right now I just want you to start drawing pictures around the theme (if you’ve taken my classes you’ll already know I love icons, icons icons!). Here are a few ideas of things you might draw to get you started:

  • Aliens. Have fun with this as there are no rules! They can be as simple or as complicated as you like, and all styles work
  • Beakers, flasks, and graduated cylinders
  • Textbooks
  • A molecule
  • Puffs of steam

Top tips:

Sketches are fine at this stage if you don’t want to go to finish. You can always perfect your work after the live Zoom, or after class.

It’s best to draw the items separately. If you want to make a little scene here and there that’s fine, but it’s not necessary. The purpose of having your items separate is so you can have flexibility when creating and inventing toy items for your pitch. We’ll explain more on during the live Zoom event on Friday.

Children love a character to play with. The aliens are the stars of your toy, so be sure we can see the faces clearly. Are they appealing? Can we see the eyes? If you’ve taken Illustrating Children’s Books then you’ll already know a ton about creating characters that you can use here.
