Want to know what the previous winners of our Global Talent Search (GTS) really think about their experience? We recently interviewed the previous winners of the GTS to share their experiences with you. We’re incredibly excited to relaunch the GTS this year, and we thought our readers would love a sneak peek into the competition process (and what it’s like to win!) directly from the winners.
Above: From calendars to magic kits: Lots of lovely products featuring Katie’s work as a result of her winning the GTS & being represented by Lilla Rogers Studio!
This week we’re sharing an interview with Katie Vernon who won the GTS Special Studio Award in 2015; her prize signed her on to Lilla Rogers Studio for art representation.
Some of Katie’s clients include: Anthropologie, The Washington Post, Creative Co-Op, Oopsy Daisy, Land of Nod, Chronicle Books, and lots more!
Read on to find out all about Katie’s experience with the Global Talent Search (GTS) and what it’s like to have an agent!
Make Art That Sells: Hi, Katie! Thanks for taking time to chat with us today. We’d love to start out by asking you why you decided to enter the Global Talent Search?
Katie Vernon: I really wanted to be represented by Lilla Rogers Studio!
Did you think you had a chance at winning?
Yes, but it’s not like I was 100% sure.
What did you find useful about the Global Talent Search assignments? What did you learn?
It was more about being confident in myself and not trying to do what I thought would be “right.” The assignments were specific enough to not get totally lost, but open enough to feel like you could just be yourself.
Did the Global Talent Search help you prepare for your career in any way? If so, how?
It basically made my career. :)
What advice would you give to people who are considering entering this year’s competition?
Have fun with it- but it’s not the time to try something totally new. Do what you love to do most and put 100% into it.

Did you find any of the MATS courses helpful in preparing you for the competition or for your career as an artist after winning GTS?
I had taken A, B, Bootcamp, and Home Dec before the GTS and I definitely would not have been prepared for the assignments without them.
How did you feel when you won?
Shocked, elated, proud!
How has winning the GTS been beneficial for your career?
I’m busy all the time with amazing and fulfilling jobs!
How do you like being represented by Lilla Rogers Studio?
Love it! I feel supported and connected in a way that is hard to find if you’re freelancing by yourself.

It’s SO WEIRD that I literally had Katie’s book sitting in front of me and I was doing the “how many ways can you draw a star” prompt!! Love her work!
