Here’s Part 5: Building a texture library

Today’s #MATSprep assignment is all about texture. You’re going to create assets that you can use in your work in class. You’ll understand what I mean in a moment.

Nathalie Taylor 1

Pitch by Make Art That Sells student Nathalie Taylor. Learning how to present your art on 3D products and in a collection like this makes it more appealing to potential buyers.

Texture is a key feature of home décor products. Imagine that you’re designing a tray, for example. Is it made of wood? Distressed wood? Painted wood? Metal? Is it woven like a basket? See what I mean? It’s about surfaces. Textures. They make things a whole lot more interesting.

That’s why, in Creating Collections for Home Décor, you’ll spend a week exploring each of five key substrates for home décor design: fabric, wood/MDF, ceramic, metal and glass. Plus every week you’ll get finishing notes and more that will help take your designs to the next level and help you produce a truly show-stopping pitch.

denise chevalier

Pitch by Make Art That Sells student Denise Chevalier. Being able to speak an art director’s language makes your pitch much more appealing. Find out how in Creating Collections for Home Décor.

Today I want you to go around and photograph some textures. These will be great for you to use in making your products more exciting. You’ll be able to use these in your work either digitally or by recreating them using paint or other media (as long as they aren’t someone else’s artwork).

I’ll go first. Here are some textures from around my house that I took in literally about five minutes. Can you see how much depth texture can add to your art? What can you find in your home?

A few of the textures I found in my home in just a few minutes of looking. What will you find?

I look forward to seeing what you discover! Don’t forget to share on social media and tag @makeartthatsells and use the hashtag #MATSprep so I can find it. You delight me with your awesomeness.

That wraps up this five part home décor #MATSprep! I hope that you had fun and gained some insight, and I can’t wait to see what you do in class.

Hurry HURRY – class starts Monday, so get to it and join us! Sign up here.
