See our student art in Uppercase magazine! Imagine flicking through your favorite magazine – perhaps Uppercase magazine or Flow – and seeing YOUR gorgeous, unique art!  Art by Make Art That Sells students in Uppercase magazine issue 42. In our recent Assignment Bootcamp course, one of the assignments  was aimed at the lucrative and exciting editorial market. The assignment was to create an illustration to accompany an article on wabi sabi by Make Art That Sells co-founder Beth Kempton, following publication of her bestselling book Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life. Wabi sabi is a Japanese term connected to the idea of beauty in imperfection, so when Uppercase called for submissions around the theme of “perfectly imperfect”, it was clearly a perfect fit. Here is the stunning art from Make Art That Sells students which was included in Uppercase 42. Art by Make Art That Sells student

We’d love to show you some of our students’ cool color palettes and kooky collections!  Muted vintage color and goodness in Cynthia Frenette’s collection for Day 1 of the prep  We shared two free days of #MATSprep ahead of the start of Assignment Bootcamp 2019 in February. What’s a #MATSprep? It’s a set of free exercises to get prepared for class, or just to enjoy some creative fun and inspiration, and they’re a great way to see what Lilla’s playful teaching style is all about.  MATS preps are usually spread over a couple of days or more, and each day you complete a task without knowing what you’ll be doing with it the following day. As you can imagine, it’s enormous fun and always entertaining to find out where each prep will take you, but it’s also a brilliant way to find the joy in your artmaking, to just be in the moment and to play. Plus not knowing what will happen next is exciting and engaging;

Bootcamp 2019 #MATSPREP: Day Two

Welcome to Day 2 of your Assignment Bootcamp 2019 #MATSprep! If you missed Day 1, there’s still time to join in: find it here  Gorgeous color is so key in getting you work, and today I have a fantastic way for you to come up with a fresh color palette! Let’s face it. We all tend to rely on our same colors, and with this download I’m pushing you to break out. Give it a try, and I encourage you to use colors you don’t normally. Lilla’s tip no. 1: I have found that artists often use only bright colors. I’m limiting it to only two so that you try other colors. If you’ve taken my courses, you know that I’m all about neutrals/muted colors, so for this I’m encouraging you to do 3 muted colors. One can be any kind you want, another is a light muted color, and the last is a dark muted color. (Just so you know, I’m using ‘muted’ and ‘neutrals’ interchangeably here.) Lilla’s tip no. 2: People tend to only use light

Reading the tea leaves! See the varied approaches to the same assignment.

One of my favorite things about teaching MATS classes is being amazed at what my students do with the assignments I give them. I get to see all the beautiful work they make. Plus, I especially love to watch the growth of the students over time. In February, I gave our students an assignment to do a journal cover around the theme of reading tea leaves for our Assignment Bootcamp course. I give loads of visual inspiration, guidance, and advice, but then I encourage students to approach the assignment any way they like. Check out the diverse array of amazing work they did: Valerie Hamill Traci Sally Kelly LaPalme Rachael Grainger We’ve just released the March gallery from Assignment Bootcamp & you can take a look at even more gorgeous work by my students here. Nothing is more fun that making your best artwork with a lively group of like-minded students. Tomorrow is the very last day to sign up for my popular Assignment Bootcamp class, and I want to lure you into joining me. Get a look at this stellar work done by my students for class. What astounds me is not just the abundance of talent, but the enthusiasm and coolness of our students. In the January Mini Assignment for Bootcamp, I eased the students into the big assignment with this fun, playful Mini Assignment. I always like to give a Mini Assignment that will bring out the best in each student. How? By making it approachable, easy to draw, but with a broad scope so there is plenty of room for diversity of styles. I asked the students to draw the contents of their own bags. Check out the work, and you’ll
