Our fourth FREE quarterly Art Challenge took place in June, and, as always, we loved seeing the amazing art that you created! Today we’re sharing Lilla’s favorite art from the challenge, and letting you know how you can take part in the next FREE challenge next month.
The assignment was to draw a house plant (or two). Like florals, plants are a perennial (no pun intended) favorite for journals, notecards, bags, bolt fabric, wall art, editorial illustration, book illustration and more, so are a fantastic addition to any portfolio. Plus they’re open to all styles and media.
The winning entry for the fourth FREE Quarterly Art Challenge, by Make Art That Sells student Kristina Skutlaberg. Kristina wins a FREE place in class – join in with our next challenge for your chance to win!
As always, Lilla looked at every piece of art submitted before the deadline and – after a lot of deliberation – her top pick was by Make Art That Sells student Kristina Skutlaberg.
Lilla said: “I adore this piece. First and foremost, one responds to the fresh color palette with an unusual mix of muted greens and intense blue. I love how Kristina made the leaves translucent in tones of warm green, cool blue green, and smoky pale greens. Notice the violet lines within those leaves and the pops of textured pink dots for flowers. The face on the pot is striking and loaded with plenty of contrast, along with the graphic blue tiles, to get this image noticed on social media. It reads well even tiny. The line of the nose is done with such care, and the handles of the planter as ears is a charming touch. The page is full of interest so there are no uninteresting parts, and her signature is legible, which is key.”
Lilla added: “I could see Kristina making a few more of these and pitching them as a wall art collection or a line of ceramicware. In addition, if she makes a piece full of these anthropomorphized pots and plants, she then ought to pitch them to puzzle companies. Finally, I can see a set of greeting cards based on this image. Get pitching! Well done!”
Congrats again to Kristina, who won a place in Bootcamp Special: Character Play.
Two of Lilla’s honorable mentions, from Make Art That Sells students Jean Ruth (left) and Sharon Nullmeyer (right).
Lilla also picked eight other entries which each get an honorable mention.
More honorable mentions, from Alix M. Campbell (left), Tamisha Harris (centre) and Tim Mock (right).
Isn’t it amazing to see how differently each artist approaches the same brief?
More honorable mentions! Lilla loved these entries from Cerys Turner (left), Bridget Stoyko (centre) and Emily Patriquin (right).
