Success stories

Maruga Koops

Maruga has taken plenty of Make Art That Sells courses, including Illustrating Children’s Books twice. She’s recently landed her first children’s book illustration deal AND gotten representation with art agent Lilla Rogers after Lilla saw her art in class!

Shortly after finishing Illustrating Children’s Books for the second time, Maruga was contacted by a Belgian publisher, Clavis, who asked if she wanted to do a book project with them.

Maruga says: “They were looking for an illustrator with a lot of diversity in the illustrations and they really liked my kid book work.” The importance of including diverse characters in children’s books is something that we focus on in Illustrating Children’s Books.

Maruga adds: “This would not have been possible without the amazing advice, reviews and valuable information I got from both the Illustrating Children’s Books courses I did. I really want to thank Lilla and Zoë for all their valuable lessons and guidance.”

And that’s not all! Shortly after landing her first children’s book illustration gig, Maruga was contacted by art agent Lilla Rogers, who offered her representation: read more here. Maruga is one of EIGHT Make Art That Sells students that Lilla took on in 2021, and she’s still looking for more artists to represent: sign up for one of our courses here at a great saving, and maybe you’ll be Lilla’s next artist!

Emily says: “Illustrating Children’s Books PLUS was a springboard to me getting into illustration professionally. I’ve since written and illustrated a book which has been accepted by a small publisher, and I’ve also self-published a book which I wrote and illustrated during lockdown. The skills I learnt in Make Art That Sells assisted in my book deal, and Illustrating Children’s Books also definitely helped me on my way!”

Emily Völker

Emily signed her first children’s book illustration contract after taking Illustrating Children’s Books, and has since illustrated a second book too.

Emily says: “To be honest, I haven’t been great at promoting my work, which I feel really stupid about, but I did go to the children’s book fair in Bologna and the Frankfurt Book Fair, where I showed my portfolio and left my card with quite a few publishers. One of the publishers I met at the book fair then got in touch and offered me the illustration job!”

Emily adds: “I also sent my portfolio to a few greetings card companies. I got three clients from doing that (and I really didn’t contact a lot of companies, to be totally honest!). What this tells me is that the most important thing is to get your work out there, and to contact potential clients. If I did more of this, I would have A LOT more clients, judging from my past success rate!”

Finally Emily adds: “But without the encouragement I got from Make Art That Sells courses, I would have never even dared to show ANYBODY my portfolio. I still feel like I’m pretending to be a real illustrator. I think the most important thing I got from Make Art That Sells is basically the emotional support and the feeling that I could actually do this – and a lot of inspiration!”

Cat Scully

Cat took Illustrating Children’s Books in 2021 – and landed her first picture book illustration deal before the course even ended!

Cat Scully

Front cover and illustrations from The Mayor of Halloween is Missing! illustrated by Cat. Illustrating Children’s Books gave her the knowledge and skills to apply to an open call before the course was even done!

Cat says: “I had worked on illustrating world maps for clients like Random House, Simon and Schuster, and Scholastic and wanted to try branching out into picture books. I felt my style would adapt well, but I had no idea what to include in my portfolio or where to get started, so I signed up for Illustrating Children’s Books. I learned so much, so effectively, in such a short time that by the time I was almost done with the course and built my portfolio website, I was able to apply to an open call for a picture book illustrator and, because of my work on Lampy and Luna, I got the job!”

CAT SCULLY ENVIRONMENT 1

Cat’s full page spread from Illustrating Children’s Books. In just five weeks, you’ll build a stunning pitch presentation that contains everything an art director needs to see to give you work!

Cat adds: “All the notes from Illustrating Children’s Books on what to draw, what to put in my portfolio, and my work over the five weeks of this course helped me land a dream project! Thank you to Lilla, Zoë, and everyone in this class for their feedback and for pushing me to make even better work. I would shout my recommendation to everyone if I could: if you’re thinking of taking this course, don’t wait. Go for it!”
