But enough from us. We thought we’d check in with some 2021 My Year of Art School students and see how they found the experience and what they really thought. Here’s what they told us.

Megan Higgins

Megan’s book cover for Illustrating Children’s Books.

I landed a book deal and am about to turn illustration into my full time career.

“I signed up for My Year of Art School because I wanted to supercharge my art career. I felt like I had pushed myself about as far as I could go on my own and I wanted something to help me continue to grow and move forward with my career. With the pandemic and little to look forward to, I also hoped that the courses would bring some fun and joy to the year ahead.

“I really enjoyed My Year of Art School. It gave me a chance to sample the full spectrum of what a creative career could be. I was able to identify new interest areas and also figure out areas that I might not be THAT excited by. I also loved getting to be surrounded by fellow creatives who encouraged me to be my best. The community is really unbeatable.

“My favorite course this year was My Toy Pitch. I love Riley as a teacher, he is so positive and fun and silly. It really brought a lot of joy to my day. The breakout rooms were also incredible. I also had an entirely new creative area opened up to me. I didn’t think toys were something I could do, but after taking the course, I’ve found that it actually is something I can do and am super interested in.

One of Megan’s pitches for My Toy Pitch, her favorite class in the year.

“I booked a picture book job for the Australian market this past year and the reference images that they chose were some from Illustrating Children’s Books 2020 (I know this isn’t perfectly tied to My Year of Art School, but Illustrating Children’s Books 2020 is what got me hooked and signed up for My Year of Art School). I can’t say too much yet, but there will be a part two for this book coming. I’ve also been getting more and better paying jobs this year. I recently had a conversation with my agent and she gave me the green light to quit my full time job at the end of this school year and go full time illustration so I am also gearing up for that. I know that this is all because My Year of Art School pushed me all year long and helped me upskill and bring my A game to everything I do. It’s also helped me build the confidence to know I am ready for this next step.”

Mariska Eyck

I loved it so much I’m doing it again.

“What I love about Make Art That Sells classes is that there is a whole lot of information covered. I am going to do My Year of Art School again because I really want to give my art a fresh start. This will give me a lot of structure. I like it a lot that there is advice about how to make your work interesting for others and how to get it in front of the people who might actually get your work on products, prints or in books. So for me the mix of art assignments, business insiders’ advice and structure made me choose to do My Year of Art School again. The live classes are fun and help me keep accountable.”

Greg Vineyard

I’ve signed up for My Year of Art School for the third time: my art is better and I feel like a real artist.

“I have had such a great time with My Year of Art School over the years, not only because of how much the varied range of professional experiences are helping me continuously grow as an illustrator, but also because it has been an extremely important self-nurturing gift to put all it has to offer in front of me each year. The way I concept, process, and complete imagery has vastly improved, which has helped me hone my style.

“I love all of it, and it’s a great chance to make new friends over the extended time period. I have friends all over the world now.

“I signed up for the whole year starting in 2020 because in 2019 I found myself signing up for one more class, and then one more class, and then… it was obvious I needed to just jump in with both feet. The annual cyber sale gave me EVERYTHING for roughly the same price as one master’s credit in a traditional school.

“I sell more imagery each year personally and at my local artist venue simply because it’s become so much BETTER. I also love the special assignments we get in My Year of Art School. I create daily, I’m much more confident, I feel like a real artist, and it is the best thing about my days. Yay, MATS!”

Paulene Natalie Hübsch

I’ve grown my art in so many magical ways.

“With My Year of Art School, I wanted to give my life a new direction as an artist. This was the first year of my life where I mostly did what I really enjoy. I have learned so much in so many magical ways: I developed my style, discovered that I love to work with a limited color palette, discovered a tons of possibilities how to make money with my art.

“I met so many wonderful and talented classmates around the world. Their feedback helped me to see, where I can improve and what works well.

“What I deeply appreciate about Make Art That Sells courses are the brilliant, motivating and authentic teachers. Their spirit and passion is contagious and this kept me going.

“My favorite courses were Illustrating Children’s Books, My Kid Book Pitch and My Toy Pitch, but to be honest, all courses are great. I definitely feel prepared for the upcoming creative year (some publishers/authors showed interest in my work) and look forward to the next courses.”
