The assignment was to create an illustration to accompany an article on wabi sabi by Make Art That Sells co-founder Beth Kempton, following publication of her bestselling book Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life. Wabi sabi is a Japanese term connected to the idea of beauty in imperfection, so when Uppercase called for submissions around the theme of “perfectly imperfect”, it was clearly a perfect fit.
