MATS Students at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is held in the Spring every year in Bologna, Italy. The Fair is the event in the publishing year’s calendar, built around children’s content today. Zoë Tucker, our beloved co-teacher of the Illustrating Children’s Books course and a highly regarded children’s book art director, attended in 2018. Zoe wrote a report about the fair here and we also asked some of our MATS students who went along to send us some thoughts. So in today’s post, MATS students share a few images and thoughts on attending the fair in person! Caroline Bonne-Muller This is me in front of the fantastic artwork created by Chloe Almeras and a photo of a 1.5 hour line for a portfolio review at Nosy Crow. Meet the six new artists being represented by Lilla Rogers Studio!

We want to give a big giant shout out to everyone who entered the GTS this year. The competition was fierce! So many of you went on to get commissions and agents from the exposure, and we are delighted for your successes! Those that keep at it, and grow their work, will succeed. That’s the simple formula. We are so delighted that Kendra Binney was the grand prize winner. And the exciting part was that the work was so outstanding that Lilla and her studio ladies couldn’t resist taking on ALL SIX of the finalists! Interesting fact: The judges’ six finalists’ picks were all MATS students! MATS works! Meet all six of Lilla’s newest artists Kendra Binney, Portland, Oregon I’ve been following Kendra since we discovered her work in my Make Art That Sells courses four years ago where she stood out with her dreamy, magical style for a wall art assignment. While we know that she is capable of gorgeous

Announcing the 2018 global talent search winner(s)!

What an incredible field of talent! The level of mastery and beauty made the decision incredibly exciting yet super challenging. We are grateful to our impressive panel of VIP judges who narrowed down the field from 50 semi-finalists to six, from which we were then tasked with selecting a winner. We loved seeing the work for the final assignment, which was to illustrate a short section of one of three texts to create a double-page picture book spread. After hours of discussion and deliberation here at the Studio, including reviewing the entire body of work of each artist, we are delighted to reveal the winner of our international search for our next artist, our Global Talent Search! Based on mastery of work and originality of style, we are delighted to announce that the winner of our Global Talent Search, and next represented artist, Kendra Binney!  (Scroll down for more BIG news!)   Kendra Binney, Portland, Oregon I’ve been following Kendra since we discovered her work in my Make Art That Sells courses four years ago where she

The range of products is so vast, from book covers to children’s books, greeting cards, bird houses, children’s toys, wall art, dishtowels, puzzles, coloring books, and so much more, and in large part due to their taking Make Art That Sells (MATS). Illustrating Children’s Books Student Showcase part 6 {Oct 2017 class}

We are so proud of our wonderful Make Art That Sells alumni and are pleased to showcase a series of gorgeous student work that was produced in the previous session of the Illustrating Children’s Books class. View more student showcase posts here. Camille Medina   I created this cover for the fifth and last week of the course. It shows the main character of the story as well as the shadows of three other major characters without unveiling what they look like. I just love this image! It combines a lot of the things I like (minimalism, rough-ish lines, pencil texture, hand lettering, block colours) and I feel that it is very ‘me’. I also had a lot of fun creating the artwork that week so whenever I look at this image it brings back good memories and a feeling of excitement and positive energy. How did the ‘Illustrating Children’s Book’ class help you grow?
