Alumni Guest Post: Linda Arandas “How MATS Home Decor helped me achieve a lifelong dream”

Today, we have a guest post from MATS Alumni Linda Arandas who wrote to us to let us know how the  ‘Creating Collections for Home Decor‘ class had helped her achieve a lifelong dream! So we asked her to share her success in today’s blog post. A few weeks ago I was signed on by Abbey Road Fine Art Licensing (the fresh, artsy division of Penny Lane Publishing).  MATS Home Decor really opened my eyes to the opportunities of art licensing in the lucrative home decor industry. As a traditional artist (without Photoshop experience) I was hesitant to take the course, but I am very grateful that I took the leap of faith. I wasn’t flying alone on this journey…I was surrounded by a group of supportive fellow artists from around the world through the private Facebook group. We were all grateful to be taught by 2 of the leaders

What did you discover about yourself? I saw that nothing is ever finished and I could always do better. How would you describe the course to a friend? It was the group of designs I was most happy with and also because I managed to sell them in the summer to a U.S Home wares company for development. How did the Home Décor class help you grow? The Course helped me to put groups of designs together under a common theme, it taught me about different possibilities that were available in the Home Decor Market, it also helped me work within the same colour palette over a number of weeks, something I wouldn’t of dreamt of doing before hand. What did you discover about yourself?

One thing, in particular, that Lilla said during MATS A has really resonated with me. And that’s to do the kind of work I like to do and be myself. Because of MATS I’ve ‘met’ this incredible community of illustrators. I’m going to Surtex in 2016 with the Finch & Foxglove art collective. See more of Anne’s work here: Website | Instagram *** Rachel Mense This is a Holiday Greeting card for those who love a good adventure and winter thrills. I’ve taken MATS A and now taking static MATS B class. I’ve got so much out of MATS classes. It was really valuable knowing what different markets look for and how to go about submitting works. In terms of making art, I explored subject matters I’d never think of previously. Also, breaking a project down into small steps really helped me. I enjoy doing minis and having a plenty to work from. In 2016, I want to make a lot of art and start approaching companies. I’m going to

I have taken the MATS A October 2015 course and I am excited to take the Bootcamp course in 2016. The MATS A classes were incredibly inspirational. They help my work evolve and greatly increased my creativity. I learnt many important lessons – such as the importance of designs “popping” in small format. The classes gave me great insight into delivering art that sells. My next steps are to continue to work on my portfolio and set up my website. I am also hoping to gain representation from an agent.
